I woke up on Tuesday, May 10 nervous and excited to begin my first overseas trip by myself to Dakar, Senegal where my cousin, Kari, and her husband, Jonathan, live. The first order of business at the Atlanta airport was to take a picture of me with my two suitcases (I didn't take my entire wardrobe--the 2nd suitcase was filled with things Kari and Jonathan cannot get in Senegal)
On my first flight sat next to a woman who was 45 years old and was on her way to Morocco to meet her fiance whom she had never seen in person before. They had met a few months before online and decided to get married. She planned to visit him for 2 and 1/2 months, after which she would bring him back to the United States (supposing all went well).
My neighbor on the next flight was from Texas, and she was going to Dakar to visit her daughter and 2 year old grandson. When I told her that I'm a student at Furman, she added that her son-in-law graduated from Furman! Small world! The flight ended up being shorter than I expected it to be--- 6 hours and 45 minutes! We arrived in Dakar at 5:30 a.m.!
Hey, I hope you don't mind me posting, but it's Ariel, in case you don't know, haha. Wow!! I can't believe there are still people meeting online and getting married!!
